SABER- CONOCER (p. 83 SP2)

Saber & Conocer both mean – to KNOW

Saber is used for knowing

1. INFORMATION (yo sé español- I know Spanish)

2.FACTS (yo sé cuántas personas vive en Savannah- I know how many people live in Savannnah)

3. How to do something (ie. Yo sé bailar means I know how to dance)

Conocer is used for

1. AWARNESS

2. OF PEOPLE (yo conozco a mi mamá- I know my mamma)

3. PLACES (yo conozco KFC- I know KFC)

4. THINGS (yo conozco iPod- I know what an iPod is)

Country Report Ceiling Tile Project

1. Choose a Spanish speaking country

2. Buy a 2×2 acoustic ceiling tile ($2.06 at Home Depot)

3. Decorate the ceiling tile with the following information

a. The Spanish name for the country. Make sure to spell it correctly including any accent marks. Make sure the name is written large and bold.

b. Paint or cut and paste a map of the country on the tile

c. Paint the name of the capital city on the tile and indicate where it is on the map.

d. Paint the names of the 3 largest cities in the country and indicate where they are on the map

e. Find out what the major export of the country is and paint or paste something on the tile that represents this export.

f. Find what at least 2 cultural items (dance, song, costume, etc…) that represent the country are. Paint or paste something representing these things on the tile.

6. Make sure your name is on the back of the ceiling tile.

7. Tiles are due on Tuesday, Feb. 16.

THIS ASSIGNMENT COUNTS AS A TEST GRADE!!!

In Spanish there are 2 ways to talk about something in the past.

1. If we are talking about something that happenED at a certain time, we use the PRETERITE tense

2. If we are talking about something that was happening in the past without specifying the time, we use the IMPERFECT TENSE

To say I am going to do something I need 3 things

1. The verb IR

IR + A + verb

IR changes depending on who is doing the action

Yo VOY A comer= I am going to eat

Tú VAS A comer- You are going to eat

ÉL VA A comer- He is going to eat

ELLA VA A comer- She is going to eat

USTED VA A comer- You are going to eat

NOSOTROS VAMOS A comer- We are going to eat

ELLOS VAN A comer- They are going to eat

USTEDES VAN A comer- Y´all are going to eat

There are 2 rules for using adjectives in Spanish…

1. The adjective comes AFTER the thing it describes

The black dog

El perro negro

2. The adjective must agree with the thing in gender & number

But what about adjectives that don´t end in O or A????

They only have to be changed for number

GAR, CAR, ZAR verbs

Some verbs just don’t sound right in the past tense. When we add the é to the end of them to indicate the yo form, it changes the sound. So we have to change the spelling to keep the sound. The change only happens in the YO form. All other forms are normal. These verbs end with -GAR, -CAR, & -ZAR and they look like this…
